Slate Breaker: FD CFB DFS Week 8 (Tues)

Quarterbacks

Play of the Day: Austin Reed, Western Kentucky (@ JVSU)

The reigning passing champion needs no introduction. He is by far the best passer in the conference so whenever he is available on a slate, he is a must play. Although Reed is a safe play regardless of matchup, he gets a plus matchup and is in position to feast against this Jacksonville defense. They have not been able to stop many QBs as of late, allowing at least 18 FD points to opposing QBs in their last 3 conference games. If this defense is getting beat by QBs like Nicholas Vattiato and Keegan Shoemaker then a QB like Reed should be able to easily top 25 pts.

Kaidon Salter, Liberty (vs MTSU)

Salter is known more for his running ability than he is for his passing, but that is about to change this week. With a game against Middle Tennessee on tap, Salter will have his best passing game of the year as MTSU cannot stop the pass. After allowing the third most passing yards in the nation a year ago, MTSU still has not fixed their holes in the secondary allowing 200+ passing yards in every conference game this year. This matchup will enhance Salter's usual decent passing game which when combined with his safe rushing floor makes Slater one of the safest plays on the slate.

Carter Bradley, South Alabama (vs Southern Miss)

For his price, Bradley is a great play. He is at least 2K cheaper than the other two solid QBs on this slate and that discount is not proportionate to their difference in production. Sure Bradley is not necessarily a good fantasy QB, but he is consistent. He has scored at least 12.5 pts in every game this season, but more importantly he has averaged 20.74 in conference play so far and succeeded in conference play last year too including in this same matchup when he threw for 238 yards and 3 TDs. Bradley will not be the top scorer on this slate, but he could easily be the top value.

Running Backs

Play of the Day: Anwar Lewis, Jacksonville State (vs WKU)

My favorite value of the slate. Lewis is likely to lead this offense on Tuesday. JVSU is without their top two QB and their top two RBs so expect them to lean on the run game. Lewis is the lead man of this running game at the moment. He got 16 touches in their last game following Malik Jackson's injury. He turned those 16 touches into a very efficient 100 yards. Expect Lewis to be both efficient and effective again this week as he gets a matchup against the miserable Western Kentucky run defense. In their six games this season, WKU has allowed 7 RBs to top 11 points with 3 of those scoring a monstrous 20+. Lewis will be a slate breaker this week so make sure you have him in your lineup.

La'Damian Webb, South Alabama (vs Southern Miss)

If you want Touchdowns then Webb is your guy. Webb has 8 rushing TDs over his last 5 games so if South Alabama gets on the goal line, you know who it is going to. Webb is a bit risky as he has only topped 100 yards twice this year so he is very dependent on TDs especially as the highest priced RB on the slate. South Alabama is likely to not just win, but dominate so Webb should be able to cash in on at least 1 TD and 70+ yards, but he is nowhere near a lock for a great game.

Quinton Cooley, Liberty (vs MTSU)

Quinton Cooley is quickly establishing himself as the best RB in the conference. Cooley has rushed for over 100 yards three weeks in a row and in four of the last 5. This increased production is coming as a direct result of an increase in opportunity as he has gotten 57 carries over his last three games compared to 41 through his first three games. Liberty is a very effective run first offense so with Cooley operating as the lead back, he is a good play regardless of opponent. He may be stifled a little bit this week. MTSU has a solid run defense holding their opponent's lead back to less than 4 yards per carry in 5 of their 7 games. Cooley's talent should shine though and I am not worried about the tough matchup as Cooley and this run offense is too good to be stopped.

Frank Gore Jr., Southern Miss (@ South Alabama)

If you want a pure volume play, then Gore is your guy. No one gets more work on this slate than Gore, he has gotten 20+ carries in three straight games. Out of the three games, he turned two of those games in 100+ yard lines. I would not expect big yardage totals from Gore though as he is terribly inefficient. He has rushed for less than 3 yards per carry in 3 of his last 5 games and only averaged 3.3 yards per carry in this same matchup a year ago. Even though Gore will likely get 20+ touches, he will need a TD to reach double digit points.

Wide Receivers

Play of the Day: Caullin Lacy, South Alabame (vs Southern Miss)

Outside of the Power 5, this may be the best receiver out there (or it is the next guy on this list). He demands 10+ targets per game and he converts that opportunity into serious production. He has 5 straight 100 yard games and has scored 6 TDs over that span. Lacy is just good and he is locked into a leading role in one of the best offenses on the slate so you need him in your lineup.

Malachi Corley, Western Kentucky (@ JVSU)

Corley has been a super productive fantasy receiver for over a year now. He has scored double digit fantasy points in 16 of his last 19 games and two of the times he did not reach double digits was because he left the game early with an injury. Corley is the lead guy on the most potent passing attack in the conference and is a lock for 10+ points with a strong chance of going for 20+. If you do not have Corley in your lineup you will be left behind.

Elijah Metcalf & Justin Olson, Middle Tennessee (@ Liberty)

Middle Tennessee is going to be stifled on the ground as Liberty has not allowed any player to top 100 yards on the ground this year. They are far more susceptible through the air allowing 6 receivers to top 70 yards over their last 5 games. Metcalf is obviously the best receiver on this team. He is a true playmaker who has broken multiple long TDs in recent weeks. He is entirely reliant on the big play for his production though as he has only had more than 5 catches in one game this year. Olson is the better value and will get a lot of work in this game. Olson has multiple games with more than 5 catches and he has become a safety blanket for Vattiato and with how Liberty gets after the passer, he will be relied on heavily this week.

CJ Daniels, Liberty (vs MTSU)

If you are not going with the top two WRs on this slate, then you need Daniels in your lineup. He is the obvious top target on this team and he gets a Middle Tennessee secondary who cannot stop anybody. MTSU has allowed 11 receivers to record more than 75 yards in their 7 games this year. Daniels is a lock to hit that mark, but I do not think he will rival the production of Lacy or Corley so he may not be a great option this week given all the options.

Moussa Barry, Western Kentucky (@ JVSU)

Barry will be a sneaky play if Blue Smith remains out this week. Smith and Barry were splitting time at receiver to start the year; but following Smith's injury, Barry has been seeing the field a lot more. With more snaps has come more opportunity as he has received 5 targets in back to back weeks which is great usage for someone so cheap. Make sure you confirm Smith is out before locking Barry into your lineup; but if Smith is indeed out, Barry could be a tournament winner.
