Slate Breaker: FD CFB DFS Week 5 (Fri)

Quarterbacks

Play of the Day: Jack Plummer, Louisville (@ NC St)

This Louisville offense is far and away the best unit playing Friday night and Jack Plummer is the man leading the show. He has been a great passer throwing for 280 yards per game and he is underachieving a bit after only scoring 1 TD in two different games. Being the focal point of this offense, Plummer is more likely to have multiple scores in a game that not so he has a great baseline with the potential for a huge game if it ends up being competitive.  Plummer provides more consistency than any other QB on this slate.

Brennan Armstrong, North Carolina State (vs Louisville)

Armstrong has not been the passer that he was two years ago, but he has been a solid runner. Armstrong has averaged double digit runs in every game and been a serious threat in the redzone rushing for 3 TDs in 4 games. This rushing baseline provides Armstrong with a floor of about 20 points when you add in his mediocre passing. If Armstrong can put together a strong passing performance, he would be an elite fantasy option. With Armstrong's lack of a reliable passing game, he provides a strong floor but does not have the ceiling to win you a tournament.

Emory Jones, Cincinnati (@ BYU)

All the plusses that work for Brennan Armstrong also apply to Jones. He has not been a great passer, but his rushing utilization has been elite. Through 4 games Emory already has 55 carries and found the endzone three times on the ground. Jones has been a better passer than Armstrong too, with Jones averaging a respectable 243 passing yards per game. Jones is another nice floor play on this slate; but at a $1,300 discount when compared to Armstrong, Jones is the ideal QB to pair with Jack Plummer.

DJ Uiagalelei, Oregon State (vs Utah)

If you need an upside play then Uiagalelei is your guy. Utah is a very tough opponent for any QB so he is by no means a safe play. One thing that DJ has going for him is his redzone utilization. Whenever Oregon State has gotten into a goal to go situation, their first choice in playcall always seems to be QB run so if Oregon State can find some kind of offensive rhythm and move the ball then DJ could have a good chance at multiple rushing TDs. Keep in mind with one of the country's top defenses on the docket, only play Uiagalelei if you are feeling bold.

Running Backs

Play of the Day: Torrance Burgess Jr., UT El Paso (vs Louisiana Tech)

When we are looking at matchups, there is no RB matchup I like more than Louisiana Tech. This LT run defense is coming off its best game against a FBS opponent when they gave up 135 yards and 1 TD to Anthony Grant on six yards per tote so you can tell how poor this unit is. Every lead back that they have played this season has hit the 18.8 FD point threshold. The only question is whether Burgess is the lead back? It seems that way at the moment after he handled 22 touches while the former starter Deion Hankins only handled 3 a week ago. There is some risk here if the team decides to go away from Burgess, but if he is the guy in this backfield then he has the potential to be the top scorer on this slate.

Jawhar Jordan, Louisville (@ NC St)

Jordan has been a TD monster to start the season. Through his first 4 games, Jordan has 7 TDs and has been the team's clear top option when on the goal line. Jordan has not gotten a bunch of opportunities on this offense as he has only hit the 20 touch threshold once in four games. Jordan has not needed a lot of work though after he has topped 100 total yards in every game this year. With a high yardage baseline and a good chance to score, there is not RB on this slate that is safer than Jordan so if you can afford him, plug him in.

Jaylon Glover & Damien Martinez, Utah vs Oregon State

These two backs play each other and as their team's lead back they would be a solid play in most weeks, but this week is a little bit different. Both Glover and Martinez have tough matchups and will have to fight for every yard, but they are usually the focal points of their respective offenses so if their teams are successful then they could end up with decent lines. Damien Martinez is the more talented of the two so he is probably the safest play, but Utah's defensive front is the best in the country. Both these guys will get a lot of work in what should be a competitive game, but it should be fairly low scoring so there are no guarantees with either of these players.

Corey Kiner, Cincinnati (@ BYU)

Kiner was a stud to start the season but as this offense has sputtered over the past couple weeks, so has Kiner. Through the first two weeks, Kiner totaled 258 yards on the ground while compiling 70 yards in the games since. Kiner also has not been the team's top option in the redzone with just two TDs on the year. Kiner is a hit or miss play but if he hits, at just $7,500, Kiner could carry your lineup.

Wide Receivers

Play of the Day: Jamari Thrash, Louisville (@ NC St)

This is the most obvious pick on the slate. Thrash is an absolute stud. He is the guy on this offense, he has six scores on the season with at least one in every game. He is averaging over 100 total yards per game, the guy is a safe pick who could explode for a huge game if he is able to rack up multiple scores. You need this guy in your lineup.

Xzavier Henderson, Cincinnati (@ BYU)

Henderson may have disappointed a week ago, but the Oklahoma defense is very underrated and this week should foster different results. When this Cincinnati offense goes, Henderson is the piston driving this engine. Henderson has two games of at least 140 yards so he has big fantasy potential. Henderson has no real floor with two games under 6 points so he could disappoint you, but his upside is just too juicy to pass up.

Tyrin Smith, UT El Paso (vs Louisiana Tech)

Smith is too good of a player to be this cheap. He has been dealing with an injury to start the season, but he is a great receiver so he could hit at any moment. Smith has just 142 yards through 3 games this year, but this is a guy who totaled 1,075 yards last year. The UTEP QB situation is something to monitor too as Gavin Hardison carries an injury designation and if the team's QB is out then I would avoid Smith altogether. Smith offers as much upside as any WR on this slate, but he does not offer a competitive floor so he is a risky play especially with the questions at QB.

Smoke Harris, Louisiana Tech (@ UTEP)

Harris is the top playmaker in this LT offense. He gets 10+ targets every week and also gets a couple rushing attempts to top it off. The only issue with this guy is his lack of efficieny. He is averaging just 88 receiving yards per game on all that work. This offense overall is a little rough averaging just 22 points per game against FBS teams with Hank Bachmeier's play leaving a lot to be desired. At the end of the day Harris will get a lot of play making him a great floor play at the very least.

Devaughn Vele, Utah (@ Oregon St)

At some point, Vele is going to get back to his old ways and have a breakout game. It most likely will be when Cam Rising returns so not this week, but you never know. He is obviously the best pass catcher on this offense and in this same game a year ago, Vele had a 7/94/1 so he can beat this defense. With the lackluster QB play in Utah, Vele is probably better to avoid, but he is a solid high risk high reward play.
