Slate Breaker: FD CFB DFS Week 1 (Sun)
Quarterbacks
Play of the Day: Jordan Travis, Florida State (vs LSU)
The QB and Flex spots on this slate seem pretty obvious so I will not waste your time by going into too much detail. He is the focal point on this offense and this will be an ultra competitive game so they will be relying on Travis's arm every second the FSU offense is on the field. In this matchup a year ago, Travis passed for 260 and 2 TDs while adding 31 on the ground and expect more rushing for Travis as he ran more and more down the stretch last year.
Jayden Daniels, LSU (@ Florida State)
If Travis is in your QB spot then Daniels should be your flex. He is an electric athlete that is always a lock for a heavy allotment of rushing attempts. He has also progressed more as a passer so expect a complete line out of the LSU signal caller. Like Travis, Daniels also had a very strong game in this same matchup passing for two scores and 209 yards while being an excellent runner with 114 rushing yards on 16 attempts. With the shootout coming, you will need Daniels and Travis both in your lineup.
Chevan Cordeiro, San Jose St (vs Oregon St)
If you want to get cute and move off of the chalk, then Cordeiro is your guy. He does have a tough matchup against the Oregon St defense but he is the only other competent passer on this slate so he should be able to get around 200 yards with a score or two while getting some chunks on the ground. Cordeiro is a last resort on this slate if you need to save some funds or are just trying to get different.
Running Backs
Play of the Day: Samuel Brown, Rutgers (vs Northwestern)
I am expecting this to be an absolute blowout Rutgers win. Northwestern is going to be a shell of its former self given the offseason debacle that derailed this program. The Rutgers offense is not a proven unit though. They have an inexperienced QB who has not played a lot and when he has, he's been woefully inconsistent. So in order to maximize this game I am riding Brown all the way. He looks like the clear cut top back. He started to take over the backfield a year ago culminating in a 101 yard game against Indiana but had he season cut short by injuries. Expect to see Brown find pay dirt multiple times on Sunday.
Trey Benson, Florida State (vs LSU)
Florida State utilized a three back rotation for the first half of last season, but the team really took off when Benson took over the lion's share of the backfield work. As the regular season wrapped up, Benson went on a tear averaging 119 yards on the ground over their last 5 regular season games. This game will have the highest game total of the slate so try to get as many pieces as possible.
Damien Martinez, Oregon State (@ SJSU)
Martinez was a workhorse for this team last season after taking over the backfield in the beginning of October. He quickly showed he was deserving of the role, ending the regular season with six 100 yards games in a row. SJSU is not an opponent you should be worried about either after they just gave up 160 yards on the ground to USC. He is quite expensive so he might be hard to fit in your lineup but he is well worth his price.
Wide Receivers
Malik Nabers, LSU (@ Florida State)
Going into last season, LSU did not have an obvious WR1, but Nabers quickly proved he was worthy of that billing. He is a big play machine averaging 14.1 ypc on his way to eclipsing 1,000 receiving yards on the season. He did not score a lot last year but with him only becoming better he should be able to find green grass in the endzone on a more consistent basis. If this LSU offense goes off on Sunday night, Nabers will be a big reason why.
Jaheim Bell, Florida State (vs LSU)
Bell was a do it all player for South Carolina a year ago. Officially listed as a tight end, Bell lines all over the field even featuring as South Carolina's top RB when the team was hit by injuries. His utilization with his new team is still unknown but he should be on the field a lot especially in the redzone.
Nick Nash & Justin Lockhart, San Jose St (vs Oregon St)
Out of the two, I prefer Lockhart since he is the better route runner displaying an ability to regularly find open space but he is hurt and did not play last week so you will need to confirm his availability before you lock him in your lineup. The passing attack will be the focal point of this offense so as long as both are healthy both should be fairly productive catching passes from Cordeiro.
