Slate Breaker: FD CFB DFS Week 1 (Sat)
Quarterbacks
Play of the Day: Drake Maye, North Carolina (@ South Carolina)
This is a dream matchup. Two strong offenses and two weak defenses. This one is going to be a shootout. Enter Drake Maye, the most electric QB in all of college football. He can beat you with his arm and his feet and he will be using both heavily in the season opener. The game has an O/U of 64.5 and I expect this game to go way over so make sure you have pieces of this game.
Joe Milton, Tennessee (vs Virginia)
Milton stepped in as a replacement for Hendon Hooker last year and the offense did not miss a beat. This will once again be a high powered, quick scoring team that will be great for fantasy. I expect them to be just as pass heavy even after losing Hooker and their top two receivers. Milton has been in this program for years now so there should be very little issues with him at the helm. Virginia recovering from the absolute tragedy they went through last fall and returning to football is a great story but this just is not a good team and this should be an easy win for Tennessee. The game script could end up hurting Milton but with an implied point total of 42 he will end up with a solid line.
Frank Harris, UTSA (@ Houston)
As one of the most established starters on this week 1 slate, we should all know what to expect from Harris at this point. He will pass for 300 and add another 50 on the ground while providing multiple scores. It is his opponent Houston that will add some intrigue to this matchup. A year ago, this was a very competitive 37-35 game which kept the UTSA offense pushing for the entirety of the game leading to a huge 38.78 point day for Harris. Houston enters this year as more of a question mark after losing all their offensive difference makers from a year ago, but if this ends up being a competitive game once again, Harris is a must start.
Spencer Rattler, South Carolina (vs North Carolina)
Rattler is a great play for many of the same reasons listed for Maye above. While Rattler is nowhere close to the player that Maye is, he did have an under the radar surge in production at the end of last year. He put on a show in his final three games against the tough Tennessee, Clemson and Notre Dame teams with him throwing for an average of 348 yards against the three. This is by far my favorite game to target for fantasy on the slate and with SC liking to spread out the production, Rattler is your best chance to maximize the SC offensive output in your lineup.
Running Backs
Play of the Day: Jase McClellan, Alabama (vs MTSU)
Alabama's lead back for $7,800??? Give me all of that. This is going to be a completely different Bama offense then we are used to as with Milroe at the helm. This team will be a rushing juggernaut and McClellan stands with the most to gain from that changing philosophy. Get ready because this will be a big, big day for Bama's budding star.
TreVeyon Henderson, Ohio State (@ Indiana)
The Stroud Era is over in Columbus but Henderson represents one of the holdovers from what was one of the top offenses in all of college football a year ago. While it was a relatively disappointing season for the Buckeye back, he was dealing with nagging injuries all year long, but now he finally looks healthy. With Henderson back to full health and an inexperienced QB taking over this offense, the running game should be the main feature for this team in their opening game although this will be a pretty even split in workload between him and Miyan Williams.
Devin Mockobee, Purdue (vs Fresno St)
As the only true, clearcut bell cow on this slate; Mockobee warrants your attention. He can do it all as he is a great rusher and is a lock for a couple catches out of the backfield every game. Purdue lost their longtime QB and their top WR from a year ago so the team should rely on their only proven offensive weapon in their season opener as the new starters get their feet wet.
Nick Singleton, Penn St (vs West Virginia)
Singleton continues the trend established in this section: a proven offensive weapon who should be relied on while the offense transitions to a new signal caller. Even if this was not Drew Allar's first game as the starting QB, Singleton would still be relied on heavily as the identity of this PSU offense is the devastating ground and pound attack that this team executes with Singleton and Kaytron Allen. Allen should also end up with a strong stat line but he does not have the home run potential that Singleton does and they are very close in price so there is no reason to go for Allen over Singleton unless you want to get less chalky.
Wide Receivers
Play of the Day: Josh Cephus, UTSA (@ Houston)
Zakhari Franklin is in Mississippi and De'Corian Clark is still working his way back from injury, so Cephus went from having to fight for targets amongst an elite WR room to being the last man standing. There is a chance Clark plays in the opener but he has not been practicing full speed with the team so if he does play he will not be as involved in the gameplan as he normally would. As the top target for Frank Harris against a weaker Houston secondary, Cephus is going to have a game.
Marvin Harrison Jr., Ohio St (@ Indiana)
If you watch college football you should already know what to expect from this man. Even with a step back in the team's QB play, Harrison will be ever open and is as near of a lock to get 100 yards as any receiver in college football. The game script could be an issue for Harrison but I think that will only affect Egbuka as Harrison is nearly matchup proof due to his heavy involvement in the redzone.
Luke McCaffrey, Rice (@ Texas)
This is purely a usage play since LMC is the majority of this Rice offense. He will get a handful of rushing attempts, some screens, underneath targets as well as getting targets down the field, heck he might even throw a pass or two; he literally does it all. The addition of JT Daniels to this offense should only increase LMC's production. Texas does present a tough challenge for this offense but McCaffrey averaged 17.27 FD points in the slates he played so you can rest assured he will produce with a great high floor high ceiling combo.
Nate McCollum, North Carolina (@ South Carolina)
This is tentatively a great play, as I do like UNC WR Devontez Walker more than McCollum but he has been deemed ineligible but he is appealing that decision and he could become eligible sometime between now and kickoff so make sure you check starting lineups for this one. But whichever transfer WR ends up the #1 target for Drake Maye is an absolute must play with the shootout this will devolve into.
Squirrel White, Tennessee (vs Virginia)
I love the value White brings to the table at $6,500. It was obvious in Joe Milton's limited playing time a year ago that he loves White. White totaled 96 yards against South Carolina when Milton came on to relieve an injured Hooker and added another 108 yards when Milton started the bowl game against Clemson. Expect Milton to be looking White's way often resulting in a very solid floor for the speedy receiver.
