Slate Breaker: College Football Week 8 (Wednesday)

Game Picks Western Kentucky @ Sam Houston State The battle for 2nd place in conference USA will be a good one. Western Kentucky brings their air raid offense to match up against Sam Houston's top flight rushing attack. Sam Houston's early season success has been a huge surprise after winning just three games a year ago. I still am not completely sold and think a program with an established system like Western Kentucky should be able to handle the surprise upstarts but I have been burned by Sam Houston multiple times this season. Florida International @ Texas El Paso UTEP is winless and playing uninspired football with an average deficit of nearly 19 points. FIU's season is nothing to write home about either, but I still have far more confidence in FIU than UTEP right now. FIU should win this game with ease. Player Spotlights Quarterbacks Play of the Day: Hunter Watson, Sam Houston State (vs Western Kentucky) Watson is far from a proven passer with less than 150 passing yard...

Game Picks Troy @ South Alabama South Alabama is the only competent offense on this slate and they also have a decent defense so they will be able to easily trounce Troy. Kennesaw State @ Middle Tennessee State The Middle Tennessee State defense is absolutely horrendous but I still do not think they are bad enough to get beat by this Kennesaw State offense. Kennesaw State is undergoing a QB change so they could show some life, but they have just been outmatched in every game. If Kennesaw State can move the ball, Middle Tennessee still has a dynamic passing attack and will easily be able to outpace any production that Kennesaw State will be able to muster. Louisiana Tech @ New Mexico State Tech is a road favorite, but I just am not convinced. Basically anyone can succeed against the MTSU defense that Tech faced last week, but that success they showed has led to a lot of unwarranted optimism surrounding this team. This is still a team that scored more than 20 once before last week and Ne...

Game Picks Coastal Carolina @ James Madison Even though James Madison lost their first conference game of the season, they are the second best non Power 4 team in the country behind only Liberty. James Madison will not lose another conference game from here on out so expect a big win for the Dukes as they reestablish themselves as the team to beat in the Sun Belt. Middle Tennessee State @ Louisiana Tech The Middle Tennessee defense is a big problem but Louisiana Tech has not inspired any confidence. LT has only scored more than 20 points once this season and that was against an FCS opponent when they mustered a measly 25 points. Middle Tennessee can produce on offense as they have returned an experienced QB and RB room. Neither of these teams are good, but the experience of Middle Tennessee will lead to a road win. UT El Paso @ Western Kentucky I took a chance on UTEP last week and they got embarrassed so there is zero chance they are beating the Hilltoppers on the road. Western Kentuc...

Slate Breaker: College Football Week 6 (Saturday)

Game Picks Southern Methodist @ Louisville In a battle of the top two teams in the ACC outside of Miami, I am siding with the Mustangs. After making the full commitment to QB Kevin Jennings, SMU has looked dominant scoring an average of 54 points over the past two games. Brashard Smith looks like he was born to play RB so this offense is just too good for Louisville to keep pace. Missouri @ Texas A&M The Texas A&M defense has looked good all season long but the same cannot be said about the offense. The Missouri offense has endless weapons so they will be able to score on the stout Aggie defense while the Aggie offense will struggle leading to a dominant win for Missouri as they continue to establish themselves as a playoff team. Pittsburgh @ North Carolina North Carolina got blown out by James Madison, beat by a weak Duke team so I just do not see how you could pick them to win a single game. Pittsburgh all the way. UCLA @ Penn State Does UCLA even have an offense? Ethan Garbe...

Slate Breaker: College Football Week 6 (Friday)

Game Picks Jacksonville State @ Kennesaw State Kennesaw State has looked overmatched in every game they have played this season including a home loss to an FCS team. I do not see this changing anytime soon. Jacksonville State has faced a similarly rough start to the season, but they have shown they can win at the FBS level. The Gamecocks feature a strong rushing attack and one of Kennesaw's biggest weaknesses is their run defense so expect the Game cocks to cruise to an easy win. Houston @ Texas Christian Besides a matchup against an inferior Rice matchup, the Houston offense has looked nonexistent averaging just under 5 points in their 4 other games. I am picking Houston's opponent until they prove they can sustain some sort of consistent offensive output. Syracuse @ UNLV Even following the Matt Sluka drama, UNLV has proven they can out strategize any opponent. Even though Syracuse has looked far better than anyone thought they would with Kyle McCord making them one of the bes...

Slate Breaker: College Football Week 6 (Thursday)

Game Picks Texas State @ Troy If Troy QB Goose Crowder is out and does not end up playing then just chalk up a win for Texas State with Troy backup Tucker Kilcrease failing to throw for over 100 yards in either of his two games this year. If Crowder ends up playing, this game could be closer than most expect, but the Texas State offense just has too many weapons to be taken down by Troy. Sam Houston State @ UT El Paso Sam Houston are heavy road favorites and I just do not see why. Sure Sam Houston has shown that they can run the ball very well and UTEP is very susceptible to the run, but UTEP has talent on offense. Yes, UTEP is winless, but three of their opponents are much better than Sam Houston so those losses do not mean much when evaluating this matchup. SHSU QB Hunter Watson has looked great with the ball in his hands, but he has struggled to throw the ball. UTEP is one of the better defenses that SHSU has faced this year so the one dimensionality will come back to hurt them in a...

Slate Breaker: College Football Week 5 (Friday)

Game Picks Virginia Tech @ Miami Miami survived their first scare of the season last week when they experienced their first deficit of the season when they trailed South Florida for a whole 37 seconds. That is right Miami has only trailed in a game this season for 37 seconds. Just write it in pen now, Miami will be in the CFP as no ACC team comes close to them. Virginia Tech lost to both Vanderbilt and Rutgers so Miami should steamroll them without a single issue this week. Washington @ Rutgers What will reign supreme? A passing offense or a running offense? Washington has three great pass catchers and a decent QB in Will Rogers so they can move the ball against just about anyone. On the other side of the ball, Rutgers features a potent rushing attack led by one of the top RBs in the nation. There will be scoring in this game as both of these offenses are the strong side of their team. Rutgers will need to pass the ball if they are going to pull off the win and I do not think they have...
